First i need to tell you, you cannot brick your ipod by doing this, also this is how you put your ipod to reset. HOLD MENU AND SELECT for 6 seconds, to put it in disk mode, which it should always be while installing these,Press and hold the Menu and Select buttons for at least 6 seconds until the Apple logo appears.
When the Apple logo appears, release the Menu and Select buttons and immediately press and hold the Select and the Play/Pause buttons until the Disk Mode screen appears.
NOTE: IF THERE INS'T A LOADER.CFG file in your ipod root dirc, then make one, only after installing ipod linux.
Welcome to the home of the iPodLinux Project (http://sourceforge.net/projects/ipodlinux/)! iPodLinux is an open source venture into porting Linux onto the iPod (http://www.apple.com/ipod/). So far, we have successfully ported a customized uClinux (http://www.uclinux.org) kernel to the iPod, and written a simple user interface for it dubbed podzilla.
Additional applications and modules have been written, adding many capabilities not found in Apple's firmware.
iPodLinux currently works on all iPod generations except on 2nd/3rd generation iPod nanos and 6th generation iPod classics. Donations always help when it comes to supporting new hardware. Progress can be tracked on the Project Status.

A new installer is currently in development for Linux (WinPods only) and Windows. It will only work on some iPods. Check Project Status page to see if your iPod is supported; the "improved" revision of 5th Generation iPods, and presumably any iPod running an Apple Firmware newer than Sept. 12, 2006 (iTunes 7), will definitely not work. See Limitations. The installer is written using Qt (http://www.trolltech.com/products/qt).
The nightly builds are currently broken, thus the installer is unable to download and install the kernel. In the mean time, you can use either the networkless installer below or manually install the kernel.
The new installer was made possible by the rawpod library; it basically throws its own device system on top of the raw iPod device, so it can partition, format, read and write files to the ext2 partition, etc.
